Art Management

Department of Art

Art management is the study of management practice in non-profit art agencies such as state, local and community arts councils. The diversity of the Art Management program allows the student to select an area of concentration which best defines his/her career goals. For example, for those students interested in gallery/museum work, a thorough study of art history and criticism is recommended. Marketing or management areas of study are also recommended for business related professional work.

The broad spectrum of this program can provide students with a wide variety of entry level opportunities in management. Graduates may choose to work in museums, craft outlets, galleries, or in nonprofit art agencies. Management positions exist in the above fields and in government programs at the federal, state, and local levels. Teaching in parks and recreation facilities, senior citizen centers, and museum education programs is also available with the proper planning of an individual’s concentration.

The following list contains a representative sample of job titles of graduates with an Art Management major. Use this as an idea list, and remember that it represents some, but certainly not all, of the careers you might consider. Some of these jobs also require education beyond a bachelor’s degree.
