Biology, Pre-professional

Department of Biology

This concentration is designed to prepare students for successful admission into professional schools (medical, dental, veterinary, optometry), or for careers in biomedical research or other health-related areas. Students in this concentration complete an extensive laboratory-based curriculum in the biomedical sciences. The Pre-Health Professions Program is coordinated through the Pre-Health Professions Committee which is composed of faculty members from the Departments of Biology, Physics, and Chemistry. The committee provides students with academic advice and assistance with the application process. In addition, the committee offers students the opportunity to participate in a mock interview in preparation for their professional interviews. It is the Pre-Health Professions Committee that generally provides students' letters of evaluation to the professional schools. The Pre-Health Professions Program has experienced tremendous success in placing students into medical and other health professional schools, with acceptance rates approximately twice the national average.

Use this as an idea list, and remember that it represents some, but certainly not all, of the careers you might consider. A solid background in chemistry and good computer and communication skills are also helpful in finding employment.
