Are you a sophomore and feel it is time to make some decisions about your major?

Like many sophomores, you may be reaching a point where you have to decide on a major to go any further in your education.  Until now, perhaps you have been taking your core requirements with a few electives and/or introduction classes.  Now, you are approaching a time when you will begin to complete your core requirements and need to declare a major and begin taking courses that will lead you to that major.  How do you do this?  Here are some questions and tips for you to consider to help get you started in that process:

Which classes did you enjoy? List all of them, even the ones you do not necessarily see yourself pursuing as a major.

What aspects of the subject did you enjoy most? For example, in English classes did you enjoy writing, reading, etc;  This list may help you determine all of the majors you might pursue based on an interest.  If you enjoyed writing, you may like writing intensive subjects such as creative writing or journalism.

Which classes did you excel in? Choosing a major is more than simply being interested in a subject, you must also determine if you have the skills necessary to pursue the major.  One way to do this is by researching course check sheets and the undergraduate course bulletin.

Have you considered which concentrations and minors you could pursue?  If you have more than one major you are interested in, you may be able to choose an area of concentration or a minor to meet several of your interests and abilities.

These questions are just a starting point in making a sound decision about your major.  There are many other questions Peer Career can help you answer.  Make an appointment today!
